Set in a fantastical used car lot that gives "used" a whole new meaning, this installation explores American car culture, suburban sprawl, rising gas prices, consumerism, and the role of the salesperson in our society. A wooden and paper mache car is in the lot for sale "as is", flags and undies hang over head while car dealership ads blast from the TV. Portraits of proud Americans standing by their cars and photos of this country's vast landscape mix with drawings of cowboys and paintings of cars whose owners have found new uses for them such as planters and homes.

Video, drawing, painting, photography and sculpture will be featured by this diverse group of artists who capture aspects of the American experience with humor, nostalgia, and criticism.

Ryan is one of the most amazing painters i know right now. His work is beautiful and thought provoking and he is having an opening this friday at Lisa Dent in San Francisco. If you're around this is bound to be a stellar exhibition.

Lisa Dent Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of "Army of No One," drawings, paintings and mixed media by Ryan Pierce.

This project is a continuation of an ongoing concern with the relationship of humankind to the network of natural systems that supports us. These new works combine the artist's interest in environmental activism with a deep-seated distrust for the military and the appropriation of military culture in radical political movements. "Army of No One" features eight new paintings as well as related works.

A pair of interactive, drawing-based projects invites gallery visitors first to de-enlist from the US military empire, and to then join an anonymous coalition of "Terra-ists." A woodblock print on fabric reading, "I Will Never Serve" is available free to those who take an oath of refusal from the US military. A mock tattoo studio replaces traditional 'flash' with drawings from the artist's personal lexicon: a selection of eco-centric, anti-nationalist, and future-primitive symbols.

Participants are invited to take an original drawing with the understanding that they will get it tattooed on their body. Tattoos, long a symbol of military status, are used here to signify enlistment in an army against armies, and subscription to a value system that rejects the American military-industrial empire.

Pierce received his BFA from the Oregon College of Art & Craft and his MFA from the California College of the Arts. His work has been exhibited nationally and is currently included in "XXL," an international survey of large-scale painting at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Arts (Peekskill, NY). In 2007 he received a Cadogan award from the San Francisco Foundation and an MFA Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation. He will be included in a group exhibition at the CUE Foundation in New York in June of this year.

The premise of this exhibition starts with Triple Base's founding intention of being one "base" of many international art spaces; interconnected in a dialog about contemporary art making and experimental gallery practice. Triple Base proposes one San Francisco-based artist, Michelle Blade, to be the starting point for the show. Blade investigates the transformative roll of public gatherings where social hierarchy dissolves and abrupt moments of collective completion occur. Examination of these moments point to cultural desires of utopia, transcendence, and an authentic experience.

Triple Base curators selected galleries in other cities that likewise strive to create innovative, artist-centered gallery programming and many share a common aesthetic, non-competitive spirit, artistic alliances and affinities. Many of the participants also do more than present and sell work -- they offer artists and patrons alternate entry points to the artwork through drawing events, studio visits, lectures and experimental curatorial projects. Each curator is asked to select an artist whose work creates a dynamic pairing or friendly allegiance to Blade's work in either concept or form. Curated as a chain reaction of sorts, this group show makes connections between artists working in a similar vein and forms an international web of like-minded art spaces.

In the main gallery, Electric Works' first group exhibition in its inaugural season features selected paintings and works on paper by artists Michelle Blade, Iva Gueorguieva, Amanda Hughen, Jason Jägel, Paul Madonna, Christina Mazza, Heidi McDowell, Michele Pred, Nathan Redwood, Julie Rofman, Travis Somerville, David Tomb, and Katherine Westerhout.

This exhibition offers an opportunity to see works by artists new to the gallery along with a preview of work from upcoming shows. Newcomers to the gallery include Michelle Blade whose warmly painted constellations of group experience continue to open new worlds to us; Christina Mazza and Heidi McDowell who, from very different different directions, tackle the subjects of flora and fauna with meticulous graphite drawings. Iva Gueorguieva and Julie Rofman, two painters from Los Angeles, will also be debuting at Electric Works. Gueorguieva's work, at first glance abstractions, reward the viewer with rich, layered stories—we are happy to introduce her work to the Bay Area. Rofman's paintings provide a view of aftermath—not necessarily a bad aftermath, but a certain calm after the storm. Also new to the gallery is Michele Pred, who is responsible for this show's mini-print—rest assured she has something very special planned.

This weekend some of my paintings, photos and videos are traveling to Portland for the Affair at the Jupiter Hotel. If you are going to be around the area you should go and see all the wonderful art there are lots of great galleries going. My work will be at the Triple Base Gallery and at the Motel Gallery spaces...
Triple Base will also be trading some awesome drawings made by a handful of their artists with local Portland artists. If you want one you have to draw a picture to trade for one. It souds like good times....be sure to go by and check it out!
